Spice and Everything Nice in Ho Chi Minh Jun 29, 2009
If there is anything in Ho Chi Minh that I miss the most, it is the food! Rice noodles topped with just almost anything from nuts, herbs, prawns, and sweet spicy sauce...really unforgettable. Near Saigon Square, we ran into a cozy resto serving glorious spicy squid, kebab style fish fillet, fried rice with shrimps and more noodles!

If you want an al fresco setting along Le loi, there is a corner resto just a few minutes walk from Ben Thanh Market named Barbeque Garden. Very affordable menu ranging from grilled treats which you can spice up right there in your table. For lunch, we grilled some okra, spicy squid and some shrimps. The spring rolls were just soft and cooked right to be enjoyed. We also enjoyed the Bun Salad which was a fusion of shimps, herbs and bamboo shoots in a special sauce.

At Ben Thanh, I had a taste of the fresh spring rolls. Wrapped in almost transparent wrapper, it is best dipped in peanut sauce. I cannot say that the food is always hygienic if you are buying from hawkers. I saw one lady street hawker pounding a bag of peanuts using a rock she picked up from the sidewalk. Hahaha! Truly Asia!

What is most pleasing about Vietnamese food is the presentation. The play of colors is just beautiful and makes you wanna fork everything in. Here are sumptuous treats which you would want to try out.

And hey, before you moved to the next destination in busy Ho Chi Minh, do not forget to wash everything down with some hot Macchiato or Mocha blend at the ubiquitous Highlands Coffee. Almost everry corner in the city has one. Loving coffee, it was a nice way to settle in all those spicy treats with a lovely frothy Macchiato at Highlands Coffee near Saigon Shopping Center.
