Great hostel, friendly and they have good trips that run from the hostel Aug 10, 2011
Friendly staff, and a great location as it is on the royal mile, right in the centre of Edinburgh. they do trips to the highlands, Ilse of Skye and other places so you don't have to go look to far for something to do, or for the next step of your journey. price is ok at around £14 pounds a night for a dorm bed. rooms are clean but nothing fancy, and you get a locker for your bag. They have a big kitchen and dinning area, and do food and social nights. I have stayed here on both my trips to Scotland and will go back again

High Street Hostel, Edinburgh May 11, 2010
Probably one of the nicest hostels I've stayed in. The big comfy worn leather couches and suits of armor add a cozy cigar room feel to the common room without the smoke.

The lovely people at reception are very pleanant and helpful and get to know the guests quickly, if not by name then by face.

The hostel itself seems to be in a constant state of cleaning. I was astounded to always see someone mopping, scrubbing, or dusting. I don't think I was ever in a hostel that smelled like pinesol so much, it was rather nice I should say.

The location of the hostel is very close to City Center, it's surrounded by pubs and shops, it's right down the street from Edinburgh Castle and The HUB. Once you get to know the little alley ways it's about a three minute walk from the train and busses, if you don't know the side streets it might take you a whopping five minutes.

Affordable and overall great atmosphere Apr 30, 2010
Overall, I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this hostel. It had great character and the staff were very helpful. The only reason why I did not rate bathroom & shower service as excellent was because there were only 3 showers per floor. I think the occupancy for each floor was well above 20 people. I personally stayed in a spacious 10 bedroom mixed occupancy room. Each room also includes a locker with an extra safe inside the locker.

Also keep in mind that there are no outlets or mirrors in the rooms. There is a sign though that you can charge your camera xcetera at the desk if you would prefer. I just tried to find an unoccupied spot in the lobby and charged my stuff as I was taking advantage of the free wifi.

Excellent location, just a few steps from High street, one of the main streets in Edinburgh.

Another thing to keep in mind, the hostel has quite a number of long term residents, so the kitchen facilities can get quite busy as well as the lobby area. I talked with a few and played some billiards with a couple. Most seemed quite nice.

Speaking in regards to the kitchen facilities, the kitchen was quite large with the use of an oven as well microwaves. There is also areas where you can store bought food and many small fridges.

Cleanliness: This hostel was great with the upkeep. I often saw staff around cleaning.

The hostel is also an all ages facility, so it depends what you like. I saw a couple of families that stayed there during my stay!

Overall, like I stated before, it was a pretty good hostel with a great location.

great atmosphere! Jul 31, 2010
Most important thing - the staff. Very friendly people, always ready to help, give information or guide you around.

thanks to the great "guest card" system no one that is not accommodated can get inside.

the hostel is very clean, beds are comfy and you get your own locker. Bathrooms are kinda small, but clean and there is no problem with hot water.

for £2 you can get a nice, light breakfast.

common rooms (two of them) have a nice feeling and let you meet new people right away.

location of the hostel is perfect, it's few steps away from the city centre and about five minutes walk from the bus/train station. A lot of places to eat & drink (or shop for souvenirs) around.

it's the best hostel i've stayed at so far.

Close to royal mile Dec 14, 2009
This place is very crowded sort of feels to many people and rooms are too big. The staff at front desk have a really friendly bubbly attitude which is always good and help with charging electronics. The place can get dirty with all the parties and long term Australians staying. There is a big locker in all the rooms. I would recommend this place for a short stay but I wouldn't live here if working in Edinburgh. It is ok and a corner street of the royal mile so you will be in the middle of everything and can reach many bars nearby, there is a party about every night at this hostel in the basement though this is also the kitchen and common room.
