Fair Hostel for Kyoto, good location Nov 10, 2009

The Higashiyama Youth Hostel is located on the east side of Kyoto, nearby a lot of its impressive temples like the Kiyomizu and Daigo-ji temples. It also has a subwaystation within a 1 minute walk (Tozai line), which connects you easily with the Nijo-jo castle, the imperial palace, the Kyoto trainstation and many of the other UNESCO temples.
The hostel can be found easy, it's on the opposite of the road when you leave the east exit of the Higashiyama Station.
Rooms are shared (mine with 5 other, but private rooms are also available), toilets and a (Japanse style) bath too. Laundry is possible, 100 yen each and internet is also available, 100 yen for 15 minutes. The accomodation itself is clean and lockers are available (100 yen).
I've paid 3850 yen/night for the hostel, this includes breakfast. Diner is also an option, 800 yen. It's quite fair compared with the restaurant prices. The price of the accomodation itself it fair, maybe a bit high compared to cheaper hostels which can be found in Kyoto (with more included).
The only problem I've had with this hostel are the times: at 22:30, you'll have to be inside, shower until 22.30 and short after that lights are off. Breakfast is possible between 7.00 - 8.00 AM and at 9.00, the hostel is closed. There also where a lot of (noisy) children most of the nights I stayed there.
beds (only pic I've got...)

Because of the location I've been here again this year for 3 nights. Fortunately they don't do any wakeup calls any more!

Fair hostel near Gion district and temples Nov 10, 2009

I've spent three nights in Higashiyama Youth hostel in Kyoto. The hostel is near the Tozai subway line station Higashiyama. The temples, shrines and Gion district are nearby.

The hostel staff is friendly, but nothing more than that. Everywhere in the hostel you find signs "Don't open door", "Don't Laundry here", "Don't take food and eat here" etc. This makes you feel a bit like a little child and unwelcome in some way. The hostel has a lot of rooms and while I stayed there, there were also lots of school children.

The matrasses on the beds are very thin and the beds are not very comfortable. The breakfast is okay, but nothing special, just some bread, soup and yoghurt and it's everyday exactly the same.
There are internet computers, but it's 100 yen for 15 minutes, no wireless facilities.

Good thing about the hostel is the Japanese style hot tub! The staff is very strict about the times. You can not come in after 10.30pm.
Breakfast is very early and at 9am you have to leave the hostel.
