Hielo y Aventura El Calafate Reviews
Mini-Trekking Dec 01, 2007
Hielo y Aventura provide three options for seeing Perito Moreno up close.
The shortest and easiest is a short boat excursion on the Brazo Rico to see the south face of the glacier from the lake itself. I would argue that the views from the boat are not much better than the views from the platforms in the park so would go that route instead.
The other two options are both treks on the glacier itself. The first is Mini-Trekking which includes an hour to hour and a half on the glacier itself after crossing the Brazo Rico on the boat from the peninsula and walking to the location to step foot on the glacier. A second option is the Big Ice which travels further onto the glacier over a three hour journey. Both Ice-trekking aventures include a visit to the ice caves underneath the glacier (when available) and a trip to the viewing platforms after the trekking is completed.
Being the last day of my trip and that I was getting quite exhausted, Mini-Trekking was the selected option for the day. It was a fantastic trip with many amazing sights and sounds and views that I will remember forever. The scotch on the "rocks" is a neat touch to end the time on the ice, even though it is slightly corny at the same time.
That said the company was running about 400 people per day onto the ice for the Mini-Trekking in early Nov and that number gets closer to 500 later in the month and in January. And it does show. The trek on the glacier is over a maintained "trail" cut into the ice for people of all capabilities to enjoy. Perhaps the "Big Ice" with what is surely smaller numbers provides the more adventurous and less cookie-cutter experience. Hielo y Aventura also has a monopoly over the glacier trek experience at Perito Moreno.
That said, nothing can take away the sheer majesty and wonder that the views on the glacier provide. For that alone the trip gets an exceptional rating. A more personal experience like the Big Ice may provide could be in line for the life changing rating at a later date or by some other reviewer.
