Great location on a tight budget Dec 12, 2012
The Hides hotel Cairns is a budget hotel with a superb location on Lake Street, right in the CBD of Cairns. It's only two blocks away from the night market and the Esplanade.

It's set in a historical building, with a pleasant enough lobby and large but simple, though dirty rooms. Our room, nr 204, on the second floor was rather spacious and had three really narrow single beds. The beds were much narrower than your standard single beds. I think they're only 80 cm.

There's airco and a fan as well as a TV, a fridge and coffee and tea making facilities. There is even an iron and ironing board, but the room itself is pretty filthy and not properly cleaned. Everywhere there are hairs and sand or dirt from the previous occupants.

Our room has blinded windows, so I doubt there is much of a view. Moreover, our beds are most uncomfortable, not only because they are so narrow, but I also felt the springs of the mattress prodding in my ribs and it is so soft, it feels like it is making a pit.

The bathroom is a good size and even has a hairdryer. There is a nice selection of vanities: shampoo, conditioner, soap, shower cap etc... Oddly enough the taps for the shower are OUTSIDE the shower. So you actually have to set the water temperature outside, get in to feel it and then get back out to re-adjust etc... Quite an ordeal.

The rooms have airco but the corridors not, so it tends to get really warm in there. On the second floor there's also a laundry room with a coin operated washing machine and dryer and there's an iron with board too. The conference room on the second floor doubles as a luggage room.

There are a couple of computers with paid Internet down behind the lobby Supposedly there is wifi too, but it was not working over the two days we staid at the hotel.

A continental breakfast is served on the first floor. There's a good selection of cereals and there's toast with jam or Vegemite. Furthermore there's juice and coffee or tea. There's plenty not to get hungry. There's a nice veranda at the front of the building; a great place to get your breakfast al fresco.

You can't expect too much from a budget hotel, but it does have some good points going for it: location, breakfast... If only they could do something about the hygiene and the mattresses, this would be one of the better budget places to stay in Cairns!

Noisy!! Mar 08, 2011
The Hides Hotel is in a central location, and if like us you are in the budget area of the hotel it can be very noisy of a night and the rooms are cleaned/serviced after 4 days.

The staff were very helpful.

good place to stay in the centre of Cairns Oct 24, 2009
This hotel was a big change for us. We stayed in the outback for a couple of day's and then we arrived at cairns. In the middle of all kind of shopping centre. We really missed the outback in the beginning. This hotel is located in the centre of cairns, all kind of surf shops you can find here. This hotel is a very nice place to stay. Great big beds and Internet down stairs in the lobby. Don't forget your towel there cause your not getting it back :p But the staff did everything they could do so very friendly people. There are a lot of things to do around cairns. The reef, rain forest or koala gardens. At night we had a aboriginal diner night great experience.

Comfortable and clean, fairly inexpensive (we paid 98 AUS dollars for a double room for one night - about 40 UK pounds). The hotel is well-placed in the centre of Cairns to walk to everything you might want. It has an internet cafe downstairs, bag lockers and a laundry room, plus the price includes breakfast and a light dinner! We didn't eat afterall, and might have liked something a bit more luxurious, but the money we saved we spent in Pesci's waterfront restaurant on mudcrab!
