Hi Downtown Hostel Kiev Reviews
Intimate cozyness at central location Aug 08, 2010
This is a cozy little apartment in central Kiev, located right next to Bessarabska market and only 5 min away from the city's central Independence Square. You can either book a private 3-person room or a bed in a 6 person shared dorm. I chose the latter option and got a bed in a little room with three two storied bunk beds. The beds were pretty basic, but totally ok for the price. The only problem concerning sleeping was due to the massive heat at night (in the summer) combined with the relatively bad ventilation in the room (as there was only one (but giant) fan in the room).
The small size of the hostel and the relatively few lodgers made it very suitable for meeting new people in an intimate atmosphere.
There is lockers available to store your things in, and the hostel provides free internet connection through the hostel's lap top.
An important notice about this hostel is that (if you arrive at the airport, as I did) you will be wise to book a cab through the hostel prior to arrival, as this will ensure a low price for the 40 km fare (about 220 UAH). If you do not book a taxi through the hostel, you might be taken for a ride (in both meanings;), as I was, as I ended up being conned for more than 450 UAH by a "taxi-officer" who extorted me for more money. Furthermore the hostel can be pretty hard to locate, as there are no signs on the street and that you have to by-pass a locked gate in order to gain entrance to the hostel (for this reason, make sure to have the phone nr to the hostel on you, if you go there on your own) - if you book a driver thorugh the hostel he will know all about the hostel and see you to the check in.
The amenities at the hostel include a washing-machine, bath, toilet and a small kitchen, where it is possible to cook your own food, although it is quite cheap to eat out in the city (there is a little canteen-like ukrainian restaurant about 40 m on the way to bessarabska market, that is cheap and good).
The different hostesses (i only met women employed at the hostel) i encountered where willing to help with any problem imaginable; was it tourist attractions, order taxis or recommendations on night life. The only down side was that the hostel is not constantly staffed, and that some of the staff did not speak very good english, but this was a minor problem, as you could always call the manager and explain your predicament (this was one of several hostels belonging to the same owner in town).
The price to stay there was, if i remember accurately about 18 $ a night, which is pretty cheap for such a good location.
