Herford Vacation Guide

Herford is located in North Rhine Westphalia on the confluence of the Werre and Aa rivers, near Bielefeld. Its existance is due in part to a Benedictine nunnery and the town was built around a 13th century church which still stands today.

It was once a thriving market town, and the remains of the wall can still be seen today along the banks of the two rivers. The popolation stands at around 65,000. The streets comprise fairly old buildings which have in some cases been renovated to house modern shops, and some good restaurants.

Herford has a number of manufacturing industries including, textiles, cigars, flax and cotton spinning, sugar, chocolate, carpets, leather, furniture and is famous for the Herforder Brewery. The brewery was founded by the Uekermann brothers Gustav and Georg and is sited on Gebrueder-Uekermann-Strasse. Herforder Export pilsner is a premium beer, and the top seller in east Westphalia. In addition to the Export they also brew Miabock, Felsenkeller, Sommer Bier, Weihnachten (Christmas) Bier and 50/50.

In August the Hoekerfest is held, this is the town festival, lasting a week with numerous events, street stalls and plenty of food and drink is consumed.

Throughout December there is the Weihnachtmarkt, the Christmas Market. Each town square has it's own set of small stalls selling sweets, gluhwein and a variety of things to eat.

The town is home to MARTa Herford an innovative museum combining, furniture, art and architecture, worth a visit.
