Over 1000 of Usual and Anusual flavors at tasty Heladeria Lares Feb 06, 2009
Who doesn't like a tasty ice cream? I don't think many people would say yes. So what about going to one of the most famous ice-creams shops in Puerto Rico?
Heladeria Lares is located in Lares town, which is approx 45min from San Juan, very close to Camuy Caverns. Lares town is a small and peaceful town, but you can ask anyone there about the ice creams and they would give you directions to find this place, which is just in front of the main square. This place looks very small, but just the entrance is narrow. At the back you'll find some tables and even a dj stage, haha. This ice cream shop has been visited by people from all over the world who come here for its main attraction: the over 1000 flavors. Of course you can find the traditional ones like vanilla or chocolate, also you find others made with local fruits (I recommend the acerola and parcha) but the real sensation are the completely unusual and unexpected ones such as: bacalao (codfish), arroz con habichuelas (rice & beans) carrot, sweet potato, shrimp, avocado, corn, garlic, etc. I didn't try all of them just the maiz, which tasted like tamales, mmm But if you want something unusual but also safe go for the "coquito acanelado" (coconut w/cinammon), hehe They don't have all the flavors everyday. That would be impossible. The staff is very friendly. They let me try quite a few before making a decision. They have a policy of no more than 2 tries, but they broke it for the Peruvian, haha. Hanging on the walls you'll see a lot of pictures, newspapers and magazines. All of them talking about the famous Heladeria Lares, which is an institution here. If you are nearby, stopping here for a refreshing ice cream is highly recommended. You can enjoy it inside or take walk around peaceful Lares. Part of the 2nd Meet Up was my 1st time in the Caribbean - Puerto Rico, yay!! :) travel blog |
