Heerewaarden
a small village in between the Rhine (here it is called Waal) and the Maas.
In 1997 we celebrated the 1000 years birthday of our village, a party that lasted for the biggest part of the year.
Though Heerewaarden is small, it has a lively community and a lot of clubs.
In former times lots of families worked on their fishing boat. The salmon fishing fleet was found on the Rhine for a great part of the year.
Before WW2 water could flow unhindered from Rhine to Maas, thus making Heerewaarden a part-time island.
The water brought our clay to us, so other people made bricks.
A hard way to earn your living.
A pig would be well fed in summer to have the necessary meat in winter. Neighbours would be competing to have the heaviest pig by the end of summer.
Those days are over.
Nowadays we have a shipyard and some small companies to be proud of, but most people work in nearby cities.
On your holidays in Holland, visit Heerewaarden, and take one of the rambling paths, you might pass my house :)
