Hedgesville Vacation Guide
Hedgesville is part of Berkeley County in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle. Historically, it was settled in 1830 with land owned by Josiah Hedges and Mary Claycomb, and the settlement itself is older than the state of West Virginia; it was incorporated as part of Virginia in 1854.
Initially, Hedgesville was utilized as a trading village for settlers moving west. By the late 1800s and early 1900s, Hedgesville became a summer resort town for residents of the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland areas. Guests could stay at Mt. Clifton or Summit House, both of which were Victorian hotels at the time. Today, visitors can enjoy spending time at the Woods Resort, home to two golf courses, a spa, a swimming pool, a restaurant and a conference center.
According to the West Virginia Blue Book, the population of Hedgesville is 204, but it is actually much larger than that. A number of housing developments line Routes 9 and 901, the main roads to/from Hedgesville. Interstate 81 is approximately 6 miles to the east of Hedgesville, and accessibility to the interstate makes it a desirable bedroom community for many people working in the DC and Baltimore metro areas.
Hedgesville is now considered an "All West Virginia City." It is also a federal Bicentennial Community and is listed on the National Register as the Hedgesville Historic District.
