Head of Steam Museum Jul 19, 2015
Most people are familiar with the National Railway Museum in York. This smaller museum in Darlington however shows an important part in railway history at its original location. It focuses on early railway history, especially on the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the first public railway line to use steam locomotives. It is a good railway museum and surely worth its money, if you are somehow interested in railway history. Entry fee is 4,95 GBP per adult (2015), please check their website for actual prices, concessions and opening times.

Beside four other early engines, the pride of the museum is the original first engine of the Stockton and Darlington Railway called „Locomotion“. Beside this, the museum has an extensive coverage of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, including two reconstructed offices, a Victorian station restroom and a small exhibition about the decline of the British Railways in the 1960s. The museum is located in the old station hall of Darlington's North Road station which is still in use.

If you are interested in railway history, don't forget to have a look at Bonomi Bridge / Skerne Bridge which is considered to be one of the first railway bridges in the world.

There are also several ghost stories surrounding the station: North Road Station, being one of the oldest passenger railway stations in the world, would not be complete without its own Victorian ghost story. Indeed, there are around a dozen of them surrounding the station building. Therefore, don't be surprised to see a ghost (or something which looks like a dead body) during your museum visit.
