Hay-on-Wye Overview

Situated within the Brecon Beacons National Park, close to the border with England, Hay-on-Wye has become renowned as the 'second hand bookshop capital' of the United Kingdom.

The Hay Festival, which showcases literature and the arts, was established in 1988, and has arguably become the most important of its kind in the United Kingdom. Famously described by Bill Clinton as 'the Woodstock of the mind' in 2001, many of the great and the good from the literary world can be seen at the annual event.

As well as its literary connotations, Hay-on-Wye is close to the Black Mountains, the river Wye and the Offa's Dyke path. The town is serviced by buses from Brecon, Hereford and Llandrindod Wells.
