The 50th state to be added to the United States of America, Hawaii is located nearly dead center in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Its economy is based almost entirely on a mixture of tourism and the U.S. military, although in the past it was known as a central hub for whalers and pineapple industries. An archipelago of nearly 20 volcanic islands, there are only eight major islands: Hawaii, Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe. Out of those eight, only the first six are open to tourists, with Niihau owned privately by native Hawaiians and only open to those who have invit… read moreations, while Kahoolawe was a former U.S. bombing range, and is thus uninhabited.
Hawaii has become known worldwide for being a tropical paradise. There is literally something for everyone here, but prices are fairly expensive, and it's not your typical American vibe like what you experience on the mainland. Here, it is a unique blend of Polynesian and native Hawaiian mixed with American, making for an intoxicating mixture of cultures that keeps tourists coming back year after year.
Hawaii is not only known for surfing, its food, its lush tropical landscape and its people, but for places like the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or the Haleakala National Park. The beaches are renowned around the world, as are the resorts, and the islands feature some of the best snorkeling, surfing, and diving on the planet. In addition, there are tropical forests, plenty of mountains and lava fields, and literally untold number of activities for eco-tourists and luxury lovers alike.
From the museums to the mountains to the national parks and the residents, or the beaches, the surfing and the food, Hawaii offers a Pacific Ocean adventure unlike anything else you'll experience in the United States. Everyone should come here at least once in their lifetime and spend a week or two exploring the islands and the people.
Even the exotic name of this particular Hawaiian island, Oahu, conjures up images of grass skirts, beachside bars, surfing, cocktails and coconuts. You could happily drift away for weeks enjo…
