Hawaii Vacation Guide

The Big Island of Hawaii is not only the largest island of the Hawaiian Island chain, but also the most diverse, with climate zones ranging from tropical rainforest to grassland to dry desert to barren tundra. This is the only place in the world where you can ski and surf in the same day!

The island is built from five separate volcanoes: Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualālai, Mauna Loa, and Kīlauea. Both Mauna Loa and Kīlauea are active and are part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Kīlauea has been erupting continuously since 1983, and is one of the most popular attractions on the island.

On the Big Island, you can explore ancient Hawaiian heiaus (temples of worship), preserved through the years. You can visit the southernmost point in the United States and relax on black sand beaches while native honu (turtles) pop their heads out of the waves. You can tour Kona coffee plantations, orchid farms, and macadamia nut farms. Explore lava tubes and go parasailing. Tee off on some of the finest golf courses in the world at the luxurious resorts on the Kohala Coast. Enjoy a Parker Ranch steak in Kamuela. Hike into Waipio Valley, where residents live just like their ancestors did 400 years ago. Snow and ski atop Mauna Kea, with its Mars-like landscape and world-class astronomical observatories.

The Big Island is a unique adventure. Fly in to either Hilo on the east side (IATA code: ITO) or Kona on the west (IATA code: KOA). A two-hour drive connects the two towns.

She was referring to Ka Lae (also known as South Point), which is the southernmost point of the United States. We wer…
