Our flight from of Honolulu was due out at 0915 this morning so we had an early start to be at the airport 2 hours prior to check in. We packed, paid our bill at the hotel last night and returned the hire car yesterday as well, so all we needed to do this morning was roll out of bed, shower, pull on some clothes and jump in a cab for our ride out to the airport. There was already a line for check in when we arrived at the Jetstar counter and the couple in the line in front of us inform...

One week ago, I was really itching for some travel. And I bought a plane ticket to one of the most beautiful places on earth. And then I remembered that I had to ask my bosses for time off =) I have never been so glad for such a lovely vacation, full of new experiences and leaving me with a desire to do so much more the next time around.Packing for this trip was insane. I packed literally a week and a half worth of clothing for 4 and a half days in Hawaii. It's just that I didn't know who I w...

Chris, Dave and I got up and got ready for our big trip to the North Shore. We made ramen for breakfast (I shudder to remember) and somewhere Chris had found coffee and was brewing a pot. I borrowed Chris' extra pair of swim trunks because there was no way I could suffer a repeat of what happened last time (read chapter 3: Waikiki and wearing wet swim trunks all day). I called up Steel. He and Dorsh were running late as usual and so we told them we were going to walk to 7-11 to buy ...

For those of you who will be visiting my lovely state on the weekend of June 9th and 10th I have some great news. You rarely find free entertainment these days, so heads up! Kuhio Avenue, Diamond Head side, there will be "Sunset on the Beach" This is a cool little gathering that is sponsered by local businesses and restaurants that bring live entertainment for your pleasure. There are bands or DJ's that perform and afterwards a move is shown. Again, the entertainment is totally free and it is...

While Mar ran some late Sunday morning errands, I opted to hang around the Ala Moana Center to buy souvenirs and write some post cards.  The Ala Moana Center is an indoor/outdoor complex with shops, eateries, and even a center stage for entertainment.  I was lucky enough to catch the tail end of the Keiki Hula Show which is performed every Sunday morning from 10-11 am.  I had 4 things to find...1) macadamia nuts for my mom, 2) Kona coffee for Joy, and 3) li hing mui flavored dr...

I'm beginning to think there was something wrong with my camera. I don't have many photos from my last couple of days back in Waikiki either. To be honest, I think I may have just been very relaxed and enjoying the last few days of my lovely honeymoon. Soaking up the sun, soaking up the view from my hotel window and as my dear friend Sweetski said, probably soaking up more than that. :) This time we stayed at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider, the oldest hotel in Waikiki. Oh, le...

We decided to drive out and look at the property that is the Parker Ranch.   We had driven through it briefly on the bus but we didn't really get to look at it.    The history of the parker ranch is fascinating...  the founder was a nineteen year old sailer who jumped ship and hid when he was supposed to leave.  Eventually he came to the attention of King Kamehameha I who had him do tasks for him.  Parker left Hawaii again to go...

This blog focuses on hiking Kalalau on the island of Kauai and cultural concerns for all of Hawaii --- if you are primarily interested in Kalalau you should proceed to the second entry and skip this potentially uncomfortable first entry. I think discovery is a relative term, because when Captain Cooke “discovered” Hawaii in 1778 it is estimated between four and eight hundred thousand natives inhabited this remote island chain.  Although I’m pretty certain the Hawaiians already k...

Independence Day fireworks at Foster Point on Hickam AFB, Hawaii.  This was our last fireworks while we lived in Hawaii.  One year the base Services hired the local Hawaiian band, Ka`au Crater Boys to play on July 4th which was a great treat since we really enjoy their music and have several of their albums.

After my last hike, I said I would have to experience the Haiku Stairs again. After all.... I forgot to charge my camera the last time and missed out on taking pictures at the summit. Once again this was an amazing hike. Fortunately it seems to get easier the more I do it. (My legs don't hurt as bad this time) The one difference is that I made a new friend on this one.Josh aka. JMSWANSON (http://www.travbuddy.com/Jmswanson) contacted me about doing the hike while he was here on his honey...

I’m cheating a bit because the itinerary we’ve been following is from our last trip in 2005.  This was the first time we didn’t get over to Hawaii, “the Big Island” – so named because as all of the other Hawaiian Islands are eroding away into never-never land, Hawaii continues to grow (it is actually bigger than all the other islands combined).  There are many facets to the Big Island : Kona is a tourist mecca; you can see snow in Hawaii by visiting the splendid M...

On July 26th I said good-bye to my family, boarded my plane and took off.  I was pretty proud of myself, because my mom was in tears, even my dad was sad.  I was okay until I looked out the window on the runway, saw the Budweiser plant (only in Jersey) and started to cry.  My grandpa worked there and when I saw the spinning eagle getting smaller and smaller I knew I was really leaving. The girls picked me up at the airport, complete with a lei and all.  They had...

After a relatively uneventful flight, we arrived early in Honolulu. We left Houston 25 minutes earlier than scheduled due to an air show that was about to begin in Honolulu. We were the last flight to arrive before the air show began. We found our luggage and took the shuttle all the way around the airport to the car rental location. When we got off the shuttle we realized the car rental location was just across the street where we got on! We picked up a Dodge Charger (they gave us a free upgr...
