Staying in a small castle at a small lake Feb 08, 2014
Havreholm Slot is one of the many small castles in the northern part of the island of Zealand. Originally it was home to a major agricultural farm but now it has been transformed from a residential manor to a hotel to make ends meet in the daily business.

Today agriculture takes a back seat to the day to day business of running conferences and catering to other guests. The old main building has grown a bit too small for housing all the guest of a hotel so instead there is a row of two level guest houses where the main part of the guest stay. There are some advantages by staying in a guest house - the doors remains open all night unlike the doors in the main building which closes at night and if you come too late you will have to pay them an exorbitant amount to open the door. The exact price depends on what time you arrive at night.

The castle is located a bit away from the main public transport so it kind of relies on people having their own transportation to reach the castle. I stayed in one of the guest houses on the first floor which was very good. I had a large room with a big living area and a desk. From there I had a great view over a small lake behind the castle. There was also an extra room with a smaller bed so the room could accommodate a family with a couple of kids. Outside the room there were a decent size balcony from where you could sit and enjoy the view over the lake - but it was a bit too cold for that when I visited.

The main building got some pretty big rooms where you can have dinner at night and there are a very big balcony facing down towards the lake. Like most hotels in this style the restaurant is pretty good and we had a delicious dinner at night. At breakfast you can enjoy the food in the same rooms which has painted walls from top to down.

The hotel got several options for activities like and indoor swimming pool which can be used all year unlike their outdoor swimming pool which obviously can only be used for a couple of months a year in Denmark. You can also take advantage of the location and spend some time outside in the forest where you can hike or drive your mountain bike. In addition they got a tree-top hike which you can walk.

The hotel has a pretty strict policy which prohibits the drinking of anything not brought at the hotel in the restaurant or their billiard room which are both well supplied. We might have brought along a few boxes of beers for the night time. after we opened the first couple of bottles it didn’t take long before some sort of manager appeared and said we had to buy our beers in the hotel or pay a steep corkage fee of 20 DKK per bottle which translate into about 3€. We managed to get the price negotiated down to half but it was still a bit annoying they slapped on this unexpected expense for the drinks.

Havreholm Castle Nov 11, 2008
This hotel is an old mansion which is converted to a hotel with limited capacity. The hotel is kept in the classic small castle way. The hotel is usually used for weddings and corporate events. Havreholm Slot is situated in the wonderful Nordsjaelland, just south of Hornbaek Beach, which again is only 40 minutes drive from Copenhagen and 10 minutes from Helsingoer.

The rooms are nice and different; they are far away from what you get at an ordinary hotel. Next to the hotel you also have access to a golf course with is very nice. I have had a couple of nice stays here and their restaurant is very good for breakfast, lunch or dinner.I have been there a couple of times and I have been very satisfied every time.

Havreholm Hall was built in 1872 by Valdemar Culmsee, a paper manufacturer, who chose as its site an ancient fete ground high above River Gurre. One of Denmark’s greatest poets, Holger Drachmann, was a frequent visitor at the Hall and married his host’s younger sister, Emmy.

After the turn of the century, Havreholm Hall was bought by Holger Jantzen, a sugar manufacturer, and thus began a new era in its history. The thing for which Havreholm Hall’s guests can thank Holger Jantzen most is that he persuaded the Danish Painter and professor of art Joakim Skovgaard to decorate the walls of the Hall’s large Paradise Hall.

The result was an interpretation of the Creation in six large and six smaller wall paintings depicting and called the Garden of Eden. The paintings, still in beautiful condition, make a lovely background in what is now Havreholm Hall’s central dining room.

In 1984, Havreholm Slot A/S took over the hall and began its conversion into the modern conference and recreation centre that now stands ready to welcome a new generation of guests to the Hall.
