Have A Shot

Wanaka is usually filled with people looking for some sweet snow on the slopes but some of the non-ski related attractions aren't given as much attention despite being a great way to fill your day if the forecast up the mountain isn't looking too good.

Enter, Have A Shot. It's a golf and shooting complex with six fun-filled ways to get competitive with your travel buddies. There's an 18 hole mini-golf course with a local theme to it; a 230m golf driving range; archery against a 15m target; a 0.22 small-bore rifle range; claybird shooting in the shotgun range; and a spongeball battlefield for shooting tag. An additional activity you can sign up for is the hole-in-one driving challenge where you can try your luck at hitting special coloured balls into white drums or television sets for a prize.

The prices are all very reasonable and when I went I actually ended up doing several different activities over a few hours. The staff are experienced and friendly and will show you how to use the guns (or clubs) and how to be safe. The complex has a few nibbles and drinks on sale if you need something to keep your energy up but it's only a 10 minute drive from Wanaka's center so don't worry too much about going hungry.

All in all it's a really fun place to try some things you may not have tried before. I recommend doing the 0.22 rifle shooting - you get to keep your target paper showing where each shot hit and along the back of the shooting range wall people from all over the world who have visited and made perfect scores have signed and posted their papers up. How some people hit a bullseye that many times in a row is beyond me!
