A good insight to German History Post-World War Feb 15, 2012
Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutchland or House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany is the country's museum of contemporary history. Thus the focus is on the events from 1945 to present.

It is located at Bundesstraße 9 and is accessible by the subway station Heusallee/ Musuemsmeile. My friend drove us there by car from Cologne. It was actually his idea to bring me to this museum as a re-introduction to German history (since I already studied it for years in school!!)

It was pretty crowded when we went there about 1. I was actually surprised to see so many elderly people ;) We spent about 3 hours here.

The museum relies on the concept of "experiencing history" thus the exhibits are arranged according to the year of the historical event & exhibits include historical films and sound records. So essentially it feels (or at least I felt) like I was walking into a history text book (and history was one of my favourite subjects in school). The bit that was extra info for me was the displays on the political history of Germany and about the involvement of German engineers in the launch of the rocket to the moon in 1969. I definitely benefitted from this trip, it is a reminder of the serious devastating (and costly) effect of having a War - I did not know that Germany only finish paying off the WW1 war debts in 2010 until this visit.

Unfortunately for me (since I dont speak German language) most of the exhibits are only explained in German language. Not many displays have the English translation. Although some have French & some other European lang translation but no English. So my friend was my personal tour guide and translator haha! He enjoyed it :)

I think there is a guided tour in English (unless I am mistaken) as I saw a group of international students.

No photography is allowed. But u can take photographs of some of the exhibits that they have on display when u come from the underground passage (from the subway).

So if you are in Bonn or nearby I would definitely recommend dropping by for a lesson in contemporary German history :)

Wernher von Braun was a major influence in the construction of the Saturn V rocket that made the Moon landings possible. Astounding isn't it, the debt Europe owed to the USA for those Wars in helping to rebuild?

Impressive museum Feb 24, 2010
The Haus der Geschichte is a museum covering the German history from WW II till now. The staff isn't the most friendly in the world, and no photo's allowed.

The part from right after the WW II till the fall of the Berlin wall is very well taken care off, after that I felt like they were taking short cuts.
