Multi-culti and open late! Jul 16, 2011
The Hauptstraße in Heidelberg abounds with people of all nationalities. Being a main tourist attraction in southern Germany, as well as having a major University brings together all kinds of different minded people.

There is lots of typical shopping spots (The Body Shop, Footlocker, etc.), but also a good number of boutiques. The food selection on the Hauptstraße is really one of the highlights. The best falafel I've found in Germany is located just off the Hauptstraße at a little hole in the wall called, naturally, Falafel. Definitely check it out if you are a vegetarian because there is a good selection of veg food there. There are also a good number of restaurants serving up typical German fare and even better, typical German beers.

Speaking of beers, the Hauptstraße features a number of good bars, my favorites being Palmbräugasse which has a relaxed environment and turns into a smaller club on the weekends. Also nice is a number of smaller bars on the Untere Straße, a block north of a section of the Hauptstraße. Here you will find good (but incredibly crowded on weekends) bars including an absinthe bar. While many of the bars in this area seem to shut down around 2:00 a.m., you can keep the party going at Cave 54 which is also just off the Hauptstraße. This place stays open late and while the crowded, hot, death-trap-in-the-event-of-a-fire spot can be a bit off-putting, it does have its fair share of beautiful people.

Pretty shopping area and old german architecure Aug 24, 2008
The Hauptstraße is a shopping area, but also gives easy access to all the major sights of old Heidelberg, like the University, two churches from different centuries, the lift to the castle, the old bridge and the Neckarstaden.

During the week, especially in the afternoon, its crowded with people, so its better to go on a Sunday, unless you just want to go shopping.

In the beginning, just past the H&M, there is a free gallery thats worth a visit. I liked the Jesuitenkirche, which is not directly in Hauptstraße, but on a place away from the river. The Heilig-geist Kirche is stunning too. I also loved walking through the empty streets that branch out from the end of Hauptstraße.

There are many cafes, restaurants and fast-food shops, and they are all good. There are also many park-like areas, with trees and benches, that you can easily take a rest at. At night, many of the cafes and bars here make up the the partying area of Heidelberg.
