Hato Caves Dec 02, 2008
If you're on the island, I recommend taking a tour of the Hato Caves, which are by the airport. This is incredibly cheap (I think it was about $6USD a person). A tour guide, which speaks 3 or 4 languages, takes you on an hour long tour of the caves, explaining the geology and history of them. It was very informative and our tour guide was a delight (there is a tip jar near the entrance to the cave...please consider leaving something for your tour guide). There are a few places in the cave that you can take photos. It's a fun and informative trip for adults and children. It also didn't seem very crowded, like some of the other tourist spots. When my husband and I went, it was just us and a family of 4 from Canada. Tours run every hour. While you are waiting for a tour, there is a nature hike trail to take around the cave. Even our cab driver offered to wait the hour so he could take us back to our hotel afterwards. I would recommend going to the caves if you ever visit the island.
