Mixing exercise and social activity Sep 12, 2009
Hash House Harrier (or as my colleague would put it as "is that some kind of a cult?" when I tried to explain to her what's it about:D).. is a social group - which normally goes out and run in the jungle/desert/any open space - we run following the trail made of flour or shredded paper or paint.
I did join this run when I was in AD and continue here in Jakarta - which turned out that the run in here is very much more exciting than running in the desert. The run trail will pass some rice fields, crossing some creeks and muddy pond and some villages, some wrecked bridges and even passing some "mandi" site (yes, some villagers took a bath in an open - air - natural shower room called river:D). Passing bananas or papaya trees and if you're lucky - raining in the middle of the run makes it even more fun!.
The run normally took 1 to 1.5 hours (some unlucky events where some of us got lost - it could take longer and have to involve some rescue time). In the village area it's better as you can ask some villager to take you in his motorbike and just need to mentioned the pick up point location. The run normally around 7-12 km (depends on who set the trail for sure) and will finish right before sunset.
After the run there will be a circle - this is what people are after - kidding!, which consist of drinking and drinking and abusing everybody. Normally there is some food and snack prepared and from there the circle can be continued to some other party or pub.
This activity is nice to get some break from hectic Jakarta scenery, some chance to test your fitness, or just some "healthier" excuse of having some drinks after, last but not least - get to know new - nice people who you can talk about different thing than work stuff!

There are several different groups which run in a certain days of the week - so summing every runs up - practically you can run almost every day (even 2 on saturdays). Some special runs depending on the events.

Don't need to be terrified with the run - as there always be some group of people who just walk or take a short route..and enjoy the drinks after!

Jakarta RACE is a annual charity run in Jakarta - which supports cancer organization. Woke up early on sunday morning (especially after a late saturday night) is never been easy. But as I keep telling myself - it is for  a good cause (an…run. My leg was still sore from the hash run the evening before so I need to wear a knee support.
