This is a park that is known for its Tudor mansion built in 1929, however there are many things to discover here besides the famous residence of John and Mary Flinn Lawrence.

In the summer, there are hundreds of wooded trails to run and bike, or walk with your dogs. There are concerts on the green, I heard the symphony comes to play here (but I've yet to catch them during one of their Sunday concerts). The Duquesne Tamburitzan's dance and sing here also.

You must also visit in the winter for acres of snowshoeing and skiing (see one of my blogs for more photographic evidence). Also there is the Winter Festival of Lights here every year. In fact. on my recent run in the park, I discovered that they start setting up the sculptures and ice figures as early as in September of the big show!

This time around I managed to capture some of the sculptures displayed there:

* Coronet, 1978, Lila Katzen

* Monumental Holistic Image IV, 1980, Betty Gold

* Ring Series #5, 1983, Fletcher Benton

* Cloudt, 1982, Ron Bennett

* Stretch, 1980-81, Charles Ginnever

* Hence, 1977, Clement Meadmore

* Manly, 1980, Lyman Kipp

* Large Escargot, 1982, David Hayes

* Mobius, 1966-83, Peter Forakis

* Large Snail, 1965, Tillie Speyer

* Totem, Lamina, Limbus, 1979, Jack Youngerman

A Wonderland Year-Round Jan 18, 2009
Hartwood Acres was originally a private estate of John and Mary Flinn Lawrence, but now the 629-acre park and the Tudor mansion the couple lived in are a part of the Allegheny County Park System. The area also includes a stable complex, beautiful riding trails, a gate lodge, an outdoor stage and amphitheatre for summer concerts and theater, and acres of public gardens.

The park is located 10 miles northeast of Pittsburgh and is easy to reach from all directions.

The park is a host to a whole slew of outdoor, year-round activities.

There is an annual Eckerd Celebration of Lights, a magnificent winter holiday light display which attracts thousands each year.

During the summer there are free concerts under the stars which are part of the Allegheny County Summer Concert Series.

Special holiday tours of the decorated Hartwood Mansion are held from mid November through the first week of January.

The annual Family House Polo Match, one of the largest charity polo events in the country. And many more.

You can always come with your dog and enjoy the leash free area or run/bike/walk along many interconnected, paved trails in this area.

There really is something for everyone here!
