Hartlepool Maritime Museum Experience Mar 16, 2017
Often just called the „Historic Dockyard“, this museum is one of the greatest attractions in Northeastern England. Here, a 19th century naval dock was restored and its surrounding buildings became exhibition rooms. Some are just your typical reconstructed Victorian shop, others house well-presented exhibitons about British mid-19th century seafaring. Of course, the legend of the Hartlepool Monkey (and „Powder Monkeys“ - young boys working in the powder storage chambers of a ship) plays an important part here.

The centrepiece is the HMS Trincomalee, the oldest British war ship still afloat (and the second oldest comissioned after HMS Victory which is in a dry dock). Access on board of the HMS Trincomalee is possible without being part of a guided tour. However, I would recommend the guided tour (included in the entry fee, available several times per day) as it shows you some corners of the ship not accessible to the public. Children's activities are available, and you are likely to have some event (for adults and kids) taking place with actors in Victorian costumes.

Adult entry fee is 10,00 GBP, concessions as well as group and family discounts apply. It sounds like a high price, but it is really worth the money – especially if you are interested ships or in British history. The Museum of Hartlepool, which shares the entrance hall with the Maritime Experience, is free and is described in separate reviews.

Welcome to the amazing Hartlepool Maritime Experience Museum Aug 09, 2012
The Maritime Experience is a unique concept which evolves around a recreated 18th century port complete with shops reminiscent of the era down to the smallest detail.

The crown jewel of the Museum is the magnificent HMS Trincomalee a frigate of the Napoleonic era and the oldest British warship still afloat.

The Hartlepool Maritime Experience has to be the most amazing and unforgettable of all attractions I have seen so far in the UK and I only hope that my pictures will do it justice.

Boarding the HMS Trincomalee is an experience like no other, and wandering through the delightful shops filled with artifacts of the era and even the typical sounds of an 18th century port is magical!

The cherry on the cake came in the shape of members of the Hartlepool Victorian Society which re-enacted scenes of the 18th century in “Meet the Georgians” a truly delightful experience.

Hartlepool has exceeded all expectations I had about my visit and will remain one of the finest experience I have enjoyed in my travels around England so far.
