If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter books and, in particular, movies then this is the place for you. If you can’t stand them then here’s two words for you – wide berth.

If you’re somewhere in between, like me, then this place is undoubtedly quite a lot of fun. I was able to tag along, for free, on an end-of-year school trip. Unsurprisingly, it’s not a cheap place to visit, and I seriously doubt I would have gone to this place had I had to fork out the entry fee myself. But it’s an enjoyable experience even if you’re not a massive fan, as the place – essentially two giant indoor exhibits with a food court/outside picnic area in between – does a very good ‘behind the scenes of movie making’ job that most people would find interesting.

The tour, self-guided but following a clearly-defined route, kicks off with an introductory movie before you’re ushered in to the highly impressive great hall (where Dumbledore welcomes the students at the start of each year), the custom-built set that is the most intact. This leads on to a vast room full of sets, costumes and props ranging from Hogwarts Dorm beds and Yule Ball paraphernalia to the Potions Lab and Hagrid’s Hut, eventually culminating with Platform 9 ¾ in all its splendour. This being kid-friendly, the experience allows you to collect stamps for an activity booklet or do things like simulated wand combat, enroute.

The outdoor lunch area features the exterior of Harry’s ‘muggle’ home, the Knight bus and the gigantic chess pieces, among other things. Refuel with an overpriced butter beer (sweet and creamy up top, flat and bitter underneath) here if you wish before entering the second indoor area. Concept sketches and waxwork models hold some interest but the main attractions are Diagon Alley and the magnificent scale model of the Hogwarts complex that ends the tour, just before the exorbitantly priced wand/gift shops.

Potter-head or not, the sheer cost associated with this place is likely the biggest stumbling block. But it was ever thus with such places – c.f. Disneyland – and only the most ardent anti-Potter person won’t find something to enjoy here.
