Harrison Smith Park Travel Reviews

Recreation Galore! Mar 08, 2008
Located about 4 blocks east of the main square in Upper Sandusky, you will find the largest and oldest of Upper Sandusky's parks - Harrison Smith Park. Many generations of residents have found recreation and relaxation here. From the time you drive in the entrance, you will discover just how much this "green space" is used!

On the west side of the park, you will find the band shell. During the summer months, local high school, church, and community members will entertain you with free concerts! Just bring you chair or blanket and enjoy the sounds of local performers. The shade of the trees and hillside is just right for a relaxing evening of entertainment.

The children's play park has been generously donated by local civic organizations. It is very well maintained, and offers the latest in kids' play structures! Swings, slides, jungle jim equipment - you name it! There is a wooden ark for all pirate's imaginations, and a large curly slide can provide entertainment for all ages.

Located near the tiny tots play area and a wonderful picnic shelter is a statue entitled, "The Siren." This artwork was given to the City of Upper Sandusky and placed in the park by a local family with close ties to the sculptor. Situated on the west end of the pond, the lady depicted watches over all activities in the area.

In keeping with our ties to the Wyandotte Indians, around the pond is a teepee. Kids find this a great place to play hide and seek. The pond is available for kids under 16 to go fishing. Each June, a local Rod and Gun Club hosts a fishing derby offering prizes donated by businesses. A replica of the Parker Covered Bridge was built in 1972 by high school students, and provides a footbridge across the pond. A beautiful fountain is lighted during the summer months.

The public swimming pool is open from early June to Labor Day. For many years, residents of Upper have flocked to the pool for relief from the hot summer weather. A summer swim team provides activity for Upper kids during June and July.

With lots of open green spaces, other activities include softball diamonds (1 lighted), soccer practice fields, hiking trails, and tree shaded picnic areas. Shelters can be reserved for reunions or special occassions by calling the mayor's office. Ample parking is available near all the areas.

The park is used by all ages! Come relax in Harrison Smith Park!

PhinsAndGills says: The Wyandot Mission Church near Upper Sandusky was the first North American Methodist mission. The mission church was built in 1824 in an effort to convert the Wyandott Indians, but was only active for 19 years before it was abandoned. The building was eventually restored in the late 1800s and 1980s...
PhinsAndGills says: This is a wonderful little park for most any occasion. I called the mayor's office a few week prior to our little party and reserved the shelter house. The park is very easy to find. From Route 23, get off at the 53/67 exit and head south into town. It's about a mile and a half on your right. ...
