Harpers Ferry is a historic town in Jefferson County, West Virginia. It is situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers where the U.S. states of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia meet. The town is located on a low lying flood plain created by the two rivers, it is thus surrounded by higher ground on all sides. Historically, Harpers Ferry is best known for John Brown's raid on the Armory in 1859 and its role in the American Civil War. As of the 2000 census, the town had a population of 307. The lower part of Harpers Ferry is located within Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Most of the remainder, which includes the higher, more populated area, is included in the separate Harpers Ferry Historic District. Two other National Register of Historic Places properties adjoin the town: the B & O Railroad Potomac River Crossing and St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church.
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) headquarters is located in Harpers Ferry and the town is one of only a few that the Appalachian Trail passes directly through.

Day Trip to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia!

A friend of mine picked me up this morning and we were off to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.  The drive from Northern VA to Harpers Ferry doesn't take too long, just over an hour.  It's a beautiful drive, which was a highlight in itself. Harpers Ferry is in Jefferson County West Virginia, and is quite near all the boarders of West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia.  It's also right on the banks of both the Potomac and the Shenandoah Rivers; there is kind of a ravine at the bot...

Where nature and history meet...

Harper's Ferry is a great spot for both history and nature enthusiasts--the little town is rich in historical events and symbolism (mainly John Brown's violent attempt to start a fight against slavery here) and it also has some stunning views of two rivers converging in the shadow of steep ravines. You park your car a couple of miles from the town and take a bus--I decided to walk it instead--just to soak in the nature a while.   The town itself has a couple of dozen mini-muse...

Now a National Historical Park, Harper's Ferry is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.  It is in West Virginia, and borders Maryland and Virginia.  Many of the buildings are recorded in the National Register of Historic Places. Originally, Harper saw the need for a ferry to get across the river, and it was used until the first bridge was built. Once an important industrial and transportation center, it now serves as a tourist destination.  Ha...
