Celebrate the 4th of July all week long in Boston Jul 10, 2012
Celebrate the Fourth of July in style with a week-long celebration concentrated in and around the downtown and waterfront districts. Boston’s Harborfest is one of my favorite annual events as it’s when many historical sites and buildings feature unique tours and various groups stage re-enactments and special programs.

There is something for everyone among the hundreds of daily and main events. Main events include Children’s Day and Chowderfest, while daily events range from behind-the-scenes tours of historical buildings and fife & drum performances to harbor cruises and talks with historical characters. I really enjoy “Tory Stories” and “Pirates and Patriots” at King’s Chapel – the performers really get into their characters as they share stories about the involvement of many King’s Chapel parishioners in the Revolutionary War. Many of the events are free or cost less than $15.

Being a port city, Harborfest also features many ships and sailing vessels, including the turnaround cruise of the USS Constitution. (If you're interested in information on the lottery for a spot on the ship itself, visit: http://www.history.navy.mil/ussconstitution/Lottery.html.)

And what Fourth of July celebration would be complete without fireworks? In Boston, the main party is on the Esplanade and features the Boston Pops Orchestra (http://www.july4th.org/). If you prefer to watch from the water, several companies offer fireworks cruises.
