Sukhothai was a mid stop on the way to Bangkok and not the easy one to figure out, or maybe I did not have much luck with it… We decided to get there just for the reason of breaking the trip from Chang Mai in the manageable fashion, and not to waste whole day in the bus. We made mistake of exiting the bus in the Old town, which is around 10 km away from the real Sukhothai city. There are some transport options and most of them include rip off by the local taxi and moto drivers. Local bus goes around kind of regularly but there are no stations. You will be waiting on the side of the road and when there is bus passing try to stop them and see where they are going :)

Somehow we made it to the central bus station in Sukhothai and while looking for the transport options, we got approached by the guy offering rooms in his hostel. I am usually very reserved towards this kind of communication, but we give it the try because guy had some pictures of the place, looked as a genuine ok guy and also he offered transportation to the hostel with his car.

Happy Guest House is located couple blocks from the central part of the town, a bit behind some kind of business and storage facility. Walking everywhere was super easy and safe. Hostel looks like unsuccessful strip mall with bottom rooms that look like shop fronts and few rooms on every level. I think that they have 4 units that are divided with walls and have 4-5 rooms per unit with their separate restrooms and entrances. We paid 250b for large room with balcony and fan. Restroom and shower were communal, but no major issues there. Bed was huge, with kind of 50’s back board and a bit harder mattress, but in general good place to sleep. Balcony looked towards the parking lot, but it was on the shady side of the building and hanging there was pleasant.

Reception is in one of the “bays” or shops that are not developed, and there is always someone around to help you with anything you need. They also make good food and have nice menu with breakfast and lunch items. I was surprised with the quality of food that our receptionist made for us. There is a WiFi on the first floor. Bunch of tables and chairs also occupy that area so you can hang around in relative peace and relax.

City has night market that is right across the bridge, nice short walk from the hostel. There is lots of dance, music, finger food, tasty treats, and interesting handmade stuff you can find there.

Motorcycle is a must have if you are interested in the old town and ruins that are scattered all over the place. We rented one moto from the hostel. It was not in a good shape, but it survived a day with us… All major ruins are far away so you’ll have to plan it a bit. Maps are available at the hostel, and they will give you all possible tips you need to know. There is also a 24 hour 7/11 store just block away.
