Lexi and I had to wake up pretty early to get breakfast, about 6:45 I think. Breakfast was a simple meal of toast, egg and some fruit, some of the other people on the boat did not join us all for breakfast as they were nursing well deserved hangovers. Breakfast was short but filling, afterwards…

I arrived in Hanoi the night of Tuesday, July 27.   My plan was to take the night train that night to Danang in central Vietnam, and then to catch a bus the next afternoon to Hoi An, which I had heard was a charming little town with a nice beach and great tailor shops. In Vietnam, how…

We didn't really put in our best effort to get the most out of Hanoi. I think that we were both conscious of the fact that in 10 days' time we'd be in Australia, and we'd probably both had enough of south-east Asia by that point. Plus, I don't think that Hanoi was as interesting as other places we'…

After breakfast four of us wondered down the road down to the Army Museum, there we sore plenty more revolutionary spiel and propaganda. In addition a few tanks and planes parked inside the museum including a Huey and a Jeep apparently used by the South Vietnamese puppet president – but it …

Hanoi was super exciting on arrival, a city very unique in the world. Noise and clamor like you wouldn’t believe, I’m not sure even the pictures convey the craziness. I’m glad I went, and recommend it if you are interested. However, after some time there for me, the charm wears off and it can…

The final road out of China was a bit disappointing.  Our final day in Hong Kong was pretty much rained out.  We took a trolley to the top of the mountain where we were disappointed by the fog which allowed us to see only about 20ft and blocked the view of the city that was just below us.…

Vietnam. This was without question the best trip of my life. Vietnam has everything, and in the best possible ways. Fantastic food, rivers, oceans, bays, mountains, forests, a rich history, the craziest driving on the planet, and all at the lowest prices. Then of course is the people: An amazing and resilient race with a lot to be proud of - especially the women, who pretty much run the country!

Back in Hanoi we checked into the Golden Buffalo hotel, another place that has mutiple imposters throughout Hanoi so any recommendation is difficult. Our one is on Ngo Huyen and it's fine apart from the St Joseph's Cathedral nearby, which for some bizarre reason rings its bells at 3.15 every mornin…
