There's a motorcycle in this internet cafe. INSIDE! Come on, can it not get any louder? And I love the pollution thats coming out of it. I guess this is so Vietnamese and I love experiencing new things really. 7 am, everyone's already out and about, millions of motorbikes pass by honking and honking, a policeman (or some sort) was just screaming at one old lady, and so many random randoms! Darn, my guesthouse wouldn't let me use their internet yet even though I can use it already at this ti...

Get to the Capital
posted by:
Mar 30, 2006 - Feb 12, 2008
To my annoyance I had to take the 17.5 hour bus journey back to the capital, Hanoi as I had a flight booked to Bangkok. This meant travelling for most of the 14th and over night missing any Premiership football I was hoping to catch. The journey was pretty much like the one on the way down, bumpy and sleepless. Again I got to Hanoi sleepy and blurry eyed and walked around the busy streets sorting out a few minor chores before my flight the next day.

Hanging on in Hanoi

I left the hotel almost as soon as I got there. A wanted to make it to a few sites before they closed. I flipped through my guidebook narrowed it down to the Museum of Ethnology, the Temple of Literature and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex. I didn't have much money on me, just about 120,000 dong which is about $7.50. I thought I had enough to make it to the Museum of Ethnology, but I still wanted to get some cash. The ATM near the hotel didn't seem to be working and the area was too cr...

Today was our free day.  We had a lovely breakfast at our hotel - yummy croissant sandwiches made to order. Since it was Monday, a lot of the museums and other tourist places were closed, so we had no real plans.  The day was sunny and beautiful so we took a lovely stroll down Hoan Kiem Lake towards the Sofitel Metropole Hotel.  It was pretty, but a bit removed from the heart and life of the city.  I wouldn't recommend it for people who want to truly experience Hanoi.&nbs...

"Tram phan tram" - bottoms up!Imagine a city where there is a mass of motorbikes that swarms the streets without any traffic lights. I spent a good part of yesterday just having cold beers at the street side cafes in old quarter watching the chaotic traffic; amazing. Just a note, please do remember to look "up and down" and "up and down" till you are safely across the street as they comes from all sides! The noise is deafening but after 2 days here I dont hear it anymore because alr...

Hanoi

After breakfast we wanted to start off our city visit of Hanoi, which is now the capital of Vietnam with the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. The area around modern Hanoi has been inhabited since at least 3000 BC. One of the first known permanent settlements is the Co Loa citadel founded around 200 BC. Through history, Hanoi was known by many names, all of which are of Chinese origin. During Chinese domination of Vietnam, it was known as Tong Binh and later Long Do Long Do. In 866, it was turned...

Arriving at Hanoi

Today, is our last day in Hanoi, and in Vietnam. We woke up early, had the usual breakfast  of bread and jam at our hostel and then headed out to take a cab to Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum. You wont miss the mausoleum as it is huge. There’s a long line of tourists waiting to get inside to see the body of Uncle Minh. Visitors are required to wear collared shirts, and trousers for the visit. We got off at the front side of the mausoleum grounds, had our photos taken in the middle of it, unt...
