Darling Guesthouse/Hello Vietnam/Hanoi Guesthouse Mar 12, 2008
DO be confused about the names of this. Their business card says Hanoi Guesthouse, the sign above the door says Darling, and written on the glass doors is “Hello Vietnam”. If you can get a driver who knows this place then get here, they are wonderful! These guys are so desperate to be in the Lonely Planet that they will do anything to help you. When we arrived from the bus we were tired and hungry but it was so early the rooms weren’t ready yet so we were given free coffee and breakfast while we waited. Internet was free (as it is in most guesthouses in Vietnam so always listen for “air con, hot water, free breakfast, free internet” war cry from the hotel touts.) The room was comfortable and we had ensuite bathroom/wet room (you get used to soaking everything) with hot water. They also sorted out our Cambodian visa for us which was a chore that had been weighing on us since we discovered they weren’t issued at the land border crossings (actually nonsense but never mind). Although it cost us more than the going rate (Cambodian visa cost $20-25, their cost $30) I paid for it because our passport was returned within the day, because a taxi to the embassy would probably have cost half that anyway, and we would have wasted our afternoon there.
