Hanoi Backpackers Hostel is one of the most popular accommodation in Hanoi, so rooms are often booked up. So I reserve a room 5 days before my return from Halong Bay Tour. The reception assure me that if I put a deposit down the room would be reserve. When I arrived at the hotel, the reception told me that all the room at Hostel 1 is gone and I will be giving a room in Hostel 2 and they would provide the transport in 5 minutes, 40 minutes later I'm still sitting and waiting. This would have been ok if the trip was not a drink fest and I had been up since 7 am and been on 3 different vessel to be at the hostel. Finally, I asked again and they finally give me a room at Hostel 1 an hour after I ask to check in. Considering they know that I will be returning from a long tour, they should not have giving away my room. I was too tired to this crap.

Hanoi backpackers Apr 29, 2011
Hanoi backpackers is firmly on the southeast asian backpacking trail. I would say it caters for gap year/post degree backpackers mostly. However obviosly other people stay. Hanoi backpackers is lots of fun - expect drinking, shouting, laughing and some heavy nights out. This is a good place to meet people who you will undoutably see all the way through vietnam, if not southeast asia. It is a popular place so if you are keen on staying book before you arrive. www.hostelbookers.com

The breakfast was a bit rubbish, for the expensive room rate I would expect more - However not an reason not to stay.

In conclusion definitely stay here unless youre not feeling sociable

Basic accomodation in good location Mar 14, 2011
Small shower, but generally a good hostel in a great location. Breakfast (bread, banana and instant noodle soup) was nice to have and they organize some great trips, including the one to halong bay!

Enjoyed the stay. Good to get to know lots of people. Their Ha Long Bay Trip is more expensive than other organized trips to Ha Long Bay but worth the price!

Great place to party and meet other travellers!! Jun 22, 2010
Hanoi Backpackers Hostel is a run by a few Aussie's i think, well whoever it is they have and are doing a great job.

Friendly helpfull staff down in reception to give you the run down of what is where etc....About 5 free internet PCs for those wishing to spend time online. A free breakfast in the kitchen downstairs although i never made it down early enough to sample it.

The reason being that i never made it down for breakfast is mainly to do with the rooftop bar, which each night at 5pm has a haapy hour (with BOGOF drinks)and great barbeque. The bar has to shut at 9pm due to neighbours etc... but dont worry, the guys who work at the hostel then lead about 20 or so willing drinkers down the road to Finnegans Irish Pub for the party to contiue till the early hours 2-4 am usually.

The dorms are clean and each dorm has its own bathroom to share with other roomies. Each bed has its own designated large locker which you could fit 3 rucksacks in if u had that many.

Laundry is also something they do here, and i made the most of this servise whilst on my stay here. They also organise loads of tours from the reception, we did the Halong Bay Tour which was great staying for a night on the party boat the Jolly Rodger.

Good place to meet good people Nov 15, 2010
I had fun staying at this hostel. As with anywhere in Hanoi there is so much activity and so many things happening here. The breakfast could be more nutritious and a little more substantial but hey, you can't have everything. This hostel was recommended to me by another traveler and I would pass on the favor. There are other places a little cheaper just next door but the management here has a good thing going. The 3 day Ha Long Bay tour through this company was top notch. So much fun. It was like a vacation from traveling. I would stay here again.

Decent, Party Heavy Hostel in Hanoi Feb 06, 2010
Hanoi Backpackers is the nicest place I've stayed in Vietnam, but it's also ridiculously loud and crazy. Someone is always screaming or making a fuss or chugging a beer or doing all three simultaneously, and by "someone" I mean dozens of people at the same time. It's LOUD. It's party central for the well-worn backpacker trail through southeast Asia. Either this is gold for you or it's your nightmare, but there certainly is no middle ground to be had.

Not the cheapest accommodation to be had, but includes breakfast, free internet, hot showers, and fairly comfortable beds. They run a solid business -- this place is always packed.

Hanoi's Backpackers meeting point Jul 14, 2010
A nice place to stay if you are backpacking in Hanoi.

Location : Excellent! In the Old City of Hanoi, at the heart of the city, 5 minutes walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, no far from the train station and the Ho Chi Minh memorial site as well.

It's located in a charming narrow street, one of these typical streets of the old Hanoi.

Staff : Excellent ! Very helpful, ready to give advise, and smiling on top of that!

Services : They organise a few tours to the Halong bay and other scenic spots in Northern Vietnam (which i didnt try). They can get you a visa for many neighbouring countries (including china - its said to be hard to get a visa to china in Hanoi), and trains tickets. BUT you may find the prices a little high. For the tours, in Halong Bay or elsewhere, I would recomment you to deal directly with a specialized travel agency. For the train tickets, if you go to the train station buy them buy them by yourself , you can easily cut the price by 2 (and the personal at the train station speak good english, its not a problem to get tickets there)

Room : I stayed in a 12 persons dorm. More than acceptable, with big lockers and ventilators.

Bathroom : It was the only little thing.. one toilet and one shower for our dorm of 12 persons, a little space. But if you dont mind sleeping in a dorm, this shouldnt be an issue.

Food : they offer free breakfast, which is highly appreciable!

Social Life : They have an amazing rooftop with a bar and frequently organise barbecues. A MUST

This was a great place to arrive into Hanoi - the staff are very friendly and helpful. The beds were clean with a very nice pillow and clean sheets. The rooms is general were clean, and there were nice lockers at the base of each bed. These come with their own locks, so very useful indeed. The rooms only have a couple of power sockets, so make sure you charge your items asap before a queue forms. Their bar is what makes the place - the beer is reasonably priced and is a great place to chat to other people and share tales with. Their tours are quite comorehensive, but cheaper ones can be found with independent agents. They do have free internet too, which is nice! The bathroom shower has decent pressure but the temperature can be variable. The toilet is decent enough, and toilet paper is provided. Overall, this is a great place to start off at - you'll meet great people here.

a typicall backpacker hostel Sep 11, 2009
I stayed in here for about 3 nights.

I paid around $7.5/ nite for their mix dorm room.

People here are extremly friendly and helpfull.

The location is perfect, not far from city central and main tourism attraction.

Free internet usage is just perfect and dont forget for their happy hours beers at their bar...buy one get on free..and its affordable.

Frankly I did not intended to stay in this place once i reached Hano, I booked another hotel not far from this place..but unfortunately..this hotel gave my room to somebody else.

Hanoi Backpacker cant fulfil my expectation for the basic need, just too loud and not that clean...

I know if you're staying at backpacker hostel you can't expect more...but I've stayed better place at backpacker hostel.

If i know another place which is quiter than this place..I'd love to stay there.... It's just too packed and loud..

A great place to meet people and get Information Sep 10, 2008
We booked this before we left the UK as we wanted some where to meet people and get ideas about the rest of the trip- this place was perfect for that. Happy Hour was great but the tours definately had a 18-30's drinking theme- we decided to book our Halong Bay tour elsewhere as we didn't come to Vietnam to not remember it. The facilities at the hostel were great (apart from the locals climbing in the window to use the shower). We paid $30 for a double room which was fine when we arrived but soon found a lot better deals and facilities near by (even over the road). Perfect for single travellers but not great for couples!

Hanoi Backpackers Hostel Oct 26, 2008
Owned by 2 Aussies who'd found a home in Hanoi, this hostel is quite western. I stayed in the airconditioned female dorm. at $7.50 a night, expensive for Hanoi standards, but well worth it with its cozy atmosphere and friendly staff.

There's a Happy Hour everyday from 5pm, 2 for 1 drinks, the Roof Top BBQ's on Friday evenings from 6pm, as well as a Sunday Sessions from 3pm. They even offer a free beer the minute you register. There were also around 10 computers for guests use (for free). Tours are being offered too at reasonable rates, though you can search for better bargains at Ma Trah Street.

Free breakfast is available at the kitchen every morning (all included in the $7.50) which includes a drink all you can 3in1 coffee, French Bread with a wide selection of jams and butter. Well worth it for $7.50 a night!

Fun and Friendly hostel Aug 26, 2008
The Hanoi Backpackers Hostel is ideally located on a small street in the old Quarter. The staff are all very friendly, always helpful and will try to answer any question as best they can. Set up by two Aussies, the place has a cosy feel that lets you feel at home straight away. Free Internet is a big bonus, though the free aspect means you may have to wait a little while for one to become available. Free wifi is also available.

The Halong Bay tour is slight more expensive than some of those offered nearby by was a great trip. The host from the hostel ensured everyone had fun, there was plenty of food, even for a veggie like myself, and the Bay itself was amazing (just mind the jellyfish!).

These people just know what a backpacker needs! Oct 26, 2008
This hostel is just great. I cannot find another word for it. I felt at home immediately. The staff does everything to make your stand pleasant, but they don't do it because you pay for your bed. You can feel they do it because they love to do it.

Yesterday one of the Vietnamese staff members helped me to learn their language. And this is just ONE example.

The hostel is always filled with people who share the same passion of travelling and that is why it is so easy to make friends here.

By the way, the rooftop bar is a good spot to hang out, even if its raining. Enjoy Hanoi!

This is a great hostel in Hanoi established by two Aussie lads. I stayed here for two nights and had an absolute blast, especially on St. Patrick's Day where a big party was organised.

I stayed in a shared room with around 10 bunks. Each bunk had a lockable closet underneath which had plenty of room to fit a whole (90L) backpack inside. All other facilities were top notch. No complaints here!

They put on a delicious BBQ dinner on the Friday and Saturday nights we were there and provided great advice about what to see and do in Hanoi. Drinks and snacks were available for good prices and the rooftop common area was an excellent spot to relax and socialise.

I'm not sure if the star rating system is supposed to confirm to "standard" ratings as per normal, but I'm giving MY 4 star rating because it was such an awesome place and the facilities were great, the lockers being the best touch because in these security conscious times, it's a weight off your mind (and back!) to store large packs safely away, for burden free excursions.

Highly recommended!
