Hangzhou 4eyes Youth Hostel 四眼井青年旅舍 Reviews
An artsy surprise for budget travelers May 26, 2011
In many cities in China, hostels can be part of the view for your trip. Hangzhou is one of them. Not only the amenities and service are above average, with some even comparable to hotels, but also they are well decorated and incorporate local architecture style and culture into design.
4eyes is the first hostel I lived when I traveled in Hangzhou. That was 4 years ago, and the hostel was newly built. This is a quietly poetic little place, which makes you even more relaxed than at home. Once you get in, you just don’t want to get out again.
The hostel was built halfway up the hill, and separate dorm buildings are carefully arranged along the slope. The hostel is decorated with many Chinese traditional elements in details, like red wall, wooden stairs and flowing man-made streams. The owner is a local artist, which added a lot of credit for the design of this place. If you are lucky enough, you can meet and chat with him in person. If not, his studio is open to everyone every day.
The only things I was not happy about was the totally transparent bathroom, even for the 3-bed dorm, and we had a guy friend who has to stay outside until 5 other girls finished showering. :) The location is not 100% central to the West Lake, but it is still within the district, 5 mins of bus to the lake, so not too bad.
Please do call the hostel at least one week ahead, especially during the busy seasons.
