Fort Monroe Casemate Museum

The Casemate Museum on historic Fort Monroe, Old Comfort Point, Virginia is the largest stone and brick fort in the US, located at the strategic entrance to Chesapeake Bay. This pre-civil war fort played a vital role for the Union and escaped slaves during the civil war. Built by Robert E. Lee when he was a lieutenant engineer. Also housed Jefferson Davis after he was captured and visited by Abraham Lincoln.

Little side trip to Fort Monroe

Since we made it here quicker then we thought and our dinner date wasn't for another 1 1/2 hours we decided to get off the highway and check out Fort Monroe, which we didn't get to see when we were in this area the week before. When we got here we almost didn't get out of the car because on top of the cold it started raining too. The first rain we had the entire trip. (Lucky us) The fort was very impressive.
