Only attraction on Alexander Hamilton Dec 08, 2016
Located in Harlem, in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood, the Hamilton Grange National Memorial is the home of Alexander Hamilton. A little out of the way from the rest of Manhattan, it is at St. Nicholas Park, across the street from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

Alexander Hamilton was one of the Founding Fathers, who helped with the founding of the US. He helped set up the country’s financial system, and served as the very first Secretary of the Treasury under George Washington. He had this home built and completed in 1802, but would only live in the house for 2 years. That was due to his death, after getting shot by Vice-President Aaron Burr in a duel.

The house would have an interesting history of its own, having to be moved twice. Yes, actually moving the entire building from one spot to another. The first time was around 1895, and the second time was in 2008, to its current location in St. Nicholas Park. And re-opened in 2011 after renovations, it can be seen only on a guided tour. And the guided tour is given by rangers who really know their history and other facts about the man himself, along with the history of the house. The tour takes you to a few rooms, and includes a short film on how the house was moved in 2008.

Some items of note include the wine bottle given by George Washington as a gift, plus the portrait of Hamilton, along with 18th century laptop that he carried around.

There is also a small museum, that tells the story of Alexander Hamilton. Basically, descriptions on his life and the impact that he made during the founding of the US. And a short film about him, plays throughout the day. Worth checking out, while waiting for the next guided tour.

As the only attraction that focuses on Alexander Hamilton, this is a must-visit for any history buff. And it may be worth a look for those who liked the musical, to learn the true story of the man himself, who rose out of poverty and made a name for himself. And in the history books.

Even better, admission is free!
