Hamilton Farmers' Market Reviews
A fine and original taste of New Zealand Oct 24, 2010
If you are fond of absolutely fresh and locally grown and produced foods Hamilton Farmers' Market (at River Road) is the place to go on a Sunday morning from 8am to 12pm.
Whenever you (as hungry traveller) get the chance of stopping by there you should do because this market provides the possibility of buying some of the freshest, most tasteful delicacies, and prettiest flowers and plants in the whole city.
Whether picking a couple of bits for Sunday's picnic lunch, choosing mouth-watering ingredients for dinner or just looking for a treat at the weekend, this market won't disappoint you.
Hamilton Farmers' Market has been highly recommended to me by locals, and when I got the opportunity of visiting it myself, I was impressed indeed. I cannot remember that I've been to such a lovely and homey market before.
The entire atmosphere is warm, inviting and promises a neat experience of grocery shopping.
The variety of seasonal products is as wide as the range of stallholders. Offered treats cover pretty much everything a foodie's heart desires: still warm bread in different flavours, spicy herbs, crunchy fruits and veggies, sweet honey, delicious jams and savory chutneys, tender fish, lovely cakes, aromatic coffee, dairy products, eggs and meat from farms nearby, choice wines and much more. Well, it honestly seems to be a never-ending list.
The best thing to do is getting inspired while strolling around and taking a bite here and there since most stallholders offer nibbles you can taste.
I also liked the idea of the kid's corner where the children can do some drawings or puzzles whereas their parents or grandparents prefer the market's offer. Another nice idea I liked are those stalls which provide café-like seating areas where you can have a coffee, piece of cake or pastry.
Hamilton Farmers' Market is surely a worthwhile reason to get up not too late on Sunday mornings. This market has become a true, well-known and authentic highlight over the years. There are diverse points underlining this popularity: zero food miles and the support of local producers play a good role in people's lives nowadays, a healthy and also tasty diet is definitely guaranteed, Sunday morning market is a fabulous possibility of catching up with friends, foreigners can get a genuine impression of varied products grown and/or produced in the Waikato Region.
For me, this market represents the original meaning of a farmers' market including local products and friendly farmers/stallholder who know their business and their costumers needs.
