Spend your money some place else Aug 17, 2008
I would be very wary of doing business with Hal’s Landing.
I strongly advise anyone hoping to throw a nice party against choosing Hal’s Landing. They are more than willing to take your party reservation, but do not tell you in advance, so that you can make an informed decision, that their contract makes you guarantee the number of guests so that not only will the food for that number of guests be prepared and charged, but you will be charged for drinks not served or consumed, as well as charged for unneeded playing cards. If you underestimate the number of guests, Hal’s charges you $2.00 per chair per adult; $1.00 per chair per child, simply to add the chair, excluding any additional food or drinks. None of this was told to us until two days before my son’s party, when all invitations had been sent out. But not only were we overcharged, our service was absolutely horrible. We were essentially ignored. I had to run around constantly looking for our servers and always found them talking in the back of the restaurant, talking in the front, and even watching t.v. Dirty plates sat at the table for 40 minutes until I had look for them to bus it. I had to look for them to refill drinks, and when we were passing out the cake, we didn’t even have forks, so I had to look for a server to bring forks. When we spoke to the manager, he argued with us for over half and hour and told us our service had been great, even when other guests verified our account that not once had the servers come around on their own and that I hadn’t eaten or been able enjoy my son’s party because of the lack of service. There was just no reasoning with him. The general manager came out and after we had spent over 500 dollars, he argued with us, called us liars (even after the server admitted we had to look for him repeatedly) and told us to leave the premises (actually escorted by a security guard who did apologize for our treatment because he realized we had not been abusive in any way) as if we were nothing more than belligerent drunks – this in front of my son on his birthday who then felt guilty that he wanted his party at Hal’s Landing and couldn’t believe his parents had been treated that way. We were charged for over 30 drinks that had not been served, playing cards that were not needed, and took home 8 extra pizzas that had been sitting out for over three hours because they made them even though not all guest were present, instead of waiting and allowing us to take home fresh pizzas. They charged us nearly 60 dollars in gratuity and made no effort to remedy the situation. All in all, we were overcharged 250 dollars. We would not have chosen Hal’s Landing had the contract been disclosed at the time of the reservation. We were so outraged that we filed a complaint with the Laredo Chamber of Commerce. They first ignored the complaint, then after pressure from the president, the owner wrote a response that said we got exactly what we asked for in the contract and addressed none of our other concerns. They disagreed with our account of what had transpired and refused to apologize for our treatment. Any complaints remain on file so I urge others to file complaints with the Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau when they encounter problems with any establishment that refuses to correct your problem, and/or I suggest that you post your experiences on-line. Business owners and their managers should behave reasonably and ethically and should be held accountable. After our appalling treatment, we spoke to many others who have also had terrible experiences with both the management and the owners of Hal’s Landing. Others have been asked to leave after complaining, or told that they are the only ones that have ever complained. The damage they did went far beyond money. They ruined the memories of my son’s tenth birthday party and refused to apologize to our 10 year old, which was our main request. We have had better experiences at Peter Piper Pizza or Jett Bowl. Do not risk it. Go somewhere else. |
