One of my favourite parts of my trip Apr 06, 2017
Went to visit this famous church on my second day in Iceland. After reading up about it and seeing some of the pictures I felt it would be almost criminal not to go!!

The church is what I used as the centre point of Reykjavik (because it's huge and you can see it from wherever you are) and it's not far to walk to if you're staying in Reykjavik.

The church is free to enter (and the main hall is stunning, make sure you check out the organ) but to go to the viewpoint at the top it is 500kr which you pay at the gift shop.

Hint: I think you could probably get away with not paying. This sounds terrible of me as it's not expensive to do but it did seem a bit pointless. The ticket was a small slip of paper which wasnt't numbered, and no one checked it at any point. I ended up giving my 'ticket' to one of the guys in my dorm and he said the same- no one checked. So he basically got it for free!!

If you want to try that then be my guest, but you didn't hear it from me......

The main attraction of this church is the viewpoint from the top. You go in a (very small) elevator to the 8th floor and then climb up a few stairs to get to the top. There you get 360 views of Reykjavik and on a clear day it's simply breathtaking!!

Take a look at the pictures I got. Definitely do this if you're in Reykjavik!!
I personally think it's a stunning…
The organ is worth just looking at

Beautiful view of a beautiful city Jan 11, 2012
I don't get very excited about views, so I was not very driven to look out from the top of this church. The architecture is also not what I typically consider "pretty" or eye-catching. I waited until the end of my trip to visit Hallgrímskirkja, and I'm actually very glad I did.

During my day, the weather was unpredictable and my first attempt to visit Hallgrímskirkja ended in failure! There is a wide open square in front of the church, and the first time I tried to visit was during a blizzard. The wind was so intense that I was almost blown away! I had to turn around and find shelter on a side street before I was able to reach the door.

If at first you don't succeed, try again! I went back to Hallgrímskirkja on the following day, which was clear and beautiful. I paid the small fee of 500kr (approx $4 USD) to go up to the top, then glanced into the sanctuary of the church. The inside was very simple, with white, soaring pillars along the aisles. I could instantly feel the peace inside the sanctuary. I would have walked through, but an individual was praying alone and I chose to head into the tower instead.

The elevator takes you to the 8th level, then you climb a short flight of stairs to the viewing area. There are open spaces on each side of the tower for viewing and taking photos. Because I had waited until the end of my visit, I could recognize many of the buildings, streets and landmarks from the tower. I spent quite awhile just drinking in Reykjavik on my last day there. I also got fantastic pictures!

All in all, visiting Hallgrímskirkja was a great experience. I highly recommend it!
