Half Dome Night Hike Reviews
Jul 03, 2007
I did the Half Dome Hike a few years ago during the day and it was grueling. This time we decided to start the hike at night and reach the summit by sunrise. Though I thought the idea was crazy, it turned out really well. Our headlamps saved us from most of obvious dangers of a night hike, and the full moon was beautiful.
The toughest part ended up being the final ascent of the summit. A pair of cables run up Half Dome's steep granite backside. Even though it's called a dome, the ascent requires a gradient of 70 degrees! Though scary, about 1000 people make it up the cables every day, so it's not too crazy. I recommend wearing a good pair of hiking boots. The sunrise was spectacular as expected, with a 360 degree view of the most amazing landscape I have ever seen. So, if you're not too scared heights, the half dome hike is a must. Just don't try to drive home right after (like we did)... |
