An Iron Age village Jun 13, 2012
Halangy Down Ancient Village is located on St Mary´s north west side, a short walk from the Telegraph Tower and right in front of Bant´s Carn Burial Chamber. People lived in this ancient village over a period of almost 1000 years, from the Iron Age through to the early medieval period.

The ruins of Halangy Down Ancient Village were uncovered by archaeological excavations between 1964 and 1977. A wealth of pottery, personal objects, animal bones and shells were found, and the sequence of houses was revealed.

The inhabitants had probably abandoned an earlier settlement nearer the coast in about 300 BC, because of increasing wind-blown sand. Among the first buildings they raised in this site were a succession of five stone houses on a larger terrace. These were built, altered and partially demolished before a new house was built in a different style higher up the slope in around AD 200. Known as a courtyard house, it is similar to others found in West Cornwall.

Each house in the village probably belonged to one family, with some rooms forming living quarters and others used for storage or housing livestock. The very small chambers in some houses might have been domestic shrines, perhaps housing figures to appropriate deities and family mementos. A group of bronze brooches found near one of these chambers may have been a ritual deposit.

People continued to live in the village until about AD 600-700. Tragically, much of the building stone was removed in the 19th century, to build a new pier in Huge Town.
