A perfect market hall and an eccentric tea room Jan 14, 2018
The Hala Targowa, market hall, was built in 1908 on the site of an old armoury. Three canon balls embedded in a wall of the tall clock tower remind us that there once stood an arsenal in this place. The brick exterior gives no clues about the building’s innovative internal structure.

The Hala was designed by Richard Plüdemann (1846-1910). The roofs are supported by giant elliptical hoops made of reinforced concrete. These hoops not only support the roofs but also the market’s fist-floor galleries.

He well-lit market hall is orderly, and well-laid out. Apart from food ingredients, ready-made food, flowers, and medicines, there is a wide range of other goods on sale.

I was particularly interested to see a shop specialising in halva, which seems to be a popular Polish confection. Also, I spotted a bread stall selling plaited loaves, just like the Jewish ‘challah’. The Poles give them a similar name. In amongst the sea of stalls, there was at least one specialising in Turkish fare, and another in Greek.

There was no shortage of dried fruits and mushrooms on sale, at very reasonable prices.

The butchers’ shops on one side of the hall were well-stocked with both raw meats and a variety of cooked meats, sausages, and salamis.

There were several places where the thirsty shopper could obtain refreshing (non-alcoholic) beverages. I went for one, whose kitchen had a vast selection of bottles containing different teas and coffees. The seating area was in a small room away from the main hall. Filled with antiques and old-fashioned chairs and sofas, lined with old photographs and potted plants, this restful sitting room was a sharp but delicious contrast to the market hall. It was a recreation of a 19th century salon.

Any visit to this café would be incomplete without viewing the toilet. This tiny room is lined with plates, mirrors, and old posters. In brief, this small enclave for refreshment within the Hala Targowa is one of the city’s more delightful curiosities. And, the staff working at this café are both kind and friendly.

Hello again, my friend, and well done on the feature. It is many, many years since I visited Wroclaw although I don't remember visiting this place. I really should get back there soon.

Congratulations on this great review and great photos too! I'd love to visit here and perhaps have lunch. A visit to Warsaw (and Krakow) has been on my list of must sees for quite a while now.
