Bloody Point Dec 02, 2000
We saw this lighthouse for the first time on our first trip down the Intercoastal Waterway. We were on our way from Hilton Head, SC to Thunderbolt GA. The lighthouse is on private property and only accessible to island guests. The island itself is the subject of much misinformation regarding how it got it's name. It is NOT Gulah for The First Key. The name Daufuskie (Duh-fuh-ski) traces its origin to two Indian words “Daufa” meaning feather and “Fuskie” meaning sharp or pointed. The outline resembled a feather trimmed to a point — the point being the extreme southern tip of the island, now known as Bloody Point. On two occasions, the English surprised a party of Indian raiders on the point and killed most of them. Since the first skirmish in 1715, the southern end of Daufuskie Island has been called Bloody Point.
