Hahnenkam gondola by night
Hahnenkam gondola by night Kitzbuhel Reviews
Gondola by night Mar 25, 2011
On Friday nights, the gondola up from Kitzbuhel runs until 11pm rather than
stopping at 5pm. This is to allow people to go up and have dinner, or possibly
just a drink, under the stars above the town. I was there in the last weeks of
the season, and although people seemed to have gone up to dinner, almost no one seemed to have gone up just for some drinks. This is surprising, because it was quite magical.
If you have a ski pass already, the lift is obviously included, and beers are
about normal price for the rest of the town. The restaurant has some seats
where you can see out over the valley, and some facing away from the valley
where you can see the mountain in the starlight and (less romantically, but just
as atmospherically) the giant machines that bash the pistes flat. I am, as
regular readers will know, a massive geek. Watching the big machines plough
their way about on black runs was one of the highlights of my trip. The slow
glow from piste bashers across the valley on the Horn was magical. We all
agreed it was like something from a sci fi film, and then played at spotting
stars. The air was very clear and there was a glow across the valley from where the moon must have set. It was really nice.
If you are skiing in Kitzbuhel, this is well worth a trip. The restaurant
provides blankets to shelter under if you want to sit outside.
