Haenggung Palace Sep 13, 2015
King Jeongjo had this palace built to honour his father, Prince Sado, who was buried in Suwon. The palace first served as a retreat for the case Seoul became attacked, but was also often used by local government officials. Later, King Jeongjo also planned to move the capital from Seoul to Suwon, but never completed this project. His son and successor, Sunjo, had all moves reverted and the capital remained in Seoul. During the Japanese Occupation, large parts of the palace were destroyed and a hospital was built on the ground. It was only in 1980s, many years after the Korean War, that reconstruction began.

Typically for a Korean Palace, it is a complex of many smaller buildings. Short text passages explaining the function of each The palace has some nice features and is worth a visit, however it is not as splendid or large as the two main palaces of Seoul, Chandeokgung and Gyeongbokgung. Don't forget to visit the neighbouring Hwaryeongjeon Shrine (included in the price and within the same grounds) which was erected by King Sunjo to honour his father. It is included in the entry fee.

Access to the palace is possible without paying for the city walls. There is a 1500 won entry fee (as of September 2015, concessions apply) which was suspended during the time of my visit. The fee seems however to be back in. Plan between one and one and a half hours for a visit, add a little more if you want to attend the guard changing ceremony on Sundays during summertime.
