Hadramoot Restaurants Dec 11, 2009
If you've never had Saudi Arabian food, Hadramoot Restaurants are the perfect introduction. The signature dish at Hadramoot is something called 'Mandi'. This is half a roast chicken (that is, by the way, cooked to perfectly fall-off-the-bone tenderness)served on a huge bed of deliciously fragrant and tasty Biryani rice, which you can top with the tomato-based sauce they give you on the side along with raw onion and some lemon. Don't forget to order a side of Yemeni bread (a platter-sized,flaky,doughy flatbread that goes perfectly) and maybe some Shakshouka (scrambled eggs with pepper, onion, tomato, spices).

There are various locations of Hadramoots in Cairo, however, my favorite of all is on Gameat El Dewal st. (Arab League st.) next to El Aqaad fishes restaurant. The place is two floors with alot of tables outside with many sheesha smokers.

Note: There are a few different names for the 'Mandi' dish:

- Bokhary (Pakistani name)

_ Kabsa (also Saudi, but Yemeni origins)

_ Math'lotha (technically Mandi, with some thin bread underneath the rice

, usually only found in Saudi Arabia)

_ Mazby (almost Mandi except they flatten and grill the chicken half)

_ Madgout (The rice is steamed or pressure-cooked instead of the usual boiling)

Mandi can also be served with lamb as the meat instead of chicken which is equally delicious

and tender, but the chicken is the more traditional style.

If you're looking for hearty, filling, comfort food this is the place to go. The blend of

flavors go together so perfectly, you'll be addicted in no time!
