Very attractive pedestrianised Square, popular by day and night Jul 31, 2011
Hackescher Markt is a great place to visit day or night, as the bars and restaurants housed in the characterful old railway arches also fill the pavement and attract tourists around the clock.

Amongst the various pavement establishments, there's a Häagen Dazs café for you ice-cream lovers, and an Italien restaurant that does a good steak. Although the Square is something of a tourist trap, it's not very pricey and I've never had anything other than good, friendly service whenever I've eaten or drank here.

The square is a great place to people-watch and, if you want to you can do this for free, as there are public places you can perch. There are usually market stalls to browse around selling jewelry, clothing and other bits and pieces. Opposite the S-Bahn entrance, tucked in the corner is cool book store, called das BUCH - open til 8pm.(sells real literature, not just tourist stuff).

At night there is quite a bit of atmosphere here; the street artists and performers come out, some of them are really good and always draw a crowd. The hookers also come out and are very much part of the street scene. They are easily recognisable, as they are really over the top in their appearance. Latex hot pants, tiny corsets etc. They all seem to wear basically the same 'uniform'. From my point of view, I think this is a good thing, as it is clear who is a hooker and who is just a single female tourist.

The Square's central location on the east side of the city makes it a good place to start a day's sightseeing or an evening's bar/club hopping. (stone's throw from Oranienburger Straße - a lively night-time strip. The somewhat more tranquil Hackescher Hof is right by here)

The Square is very popular in the evening in the summer, but I visited once at the end of March and there was plenty of atmosphere then too. There were still outdoor tables, with large patio heaters interspersed between them.

Tip for the benefit of other English bods, just take a table or a seat you like the look of and the staff will come to you.

Note: day or evening, this is a popular place with street beggars, who usually approach you with a slightly pained expression asking if you speak English, please. Best just to walk off and ignore them. As with other popular tourist traps, watch out for pick-pockets and keep a firm grip on your bag.

Thanks. Freut mich dass es Dir gefallen hat. One of my friends thought it was like Covent Garden in London, but I think it is much nicer and much more interesting.
