Very...erm...different, but welcome! Mar 26, 2011
After spending 3 days on a greyhound bus from NYC to Seattle, this hostel was EXTREMELY welcome! lol

We walked 10 blocks from greyhound station to the docks where we boarded a commuters boat-about $8 single-to the island, where a nice lady gave us a lift to the hostel. It was about 2-3 miles away. First, the lady took us to the supermarket as there would be no food available at the hostel.

It was a lovely setting and very peaceful. A perfect retreat. They have bicycles available- whether they are in good working order is a different matter!

Go there at the right time of the year and you are near to a whale watching spot.

An old west experience... Jul 29, 2008
The Vashon Island AYH Ranch is a charming spot on the edge of an 800 acre nature reserve on Vashon Island just across from bustling Seattle. The hostel is nice and very affordable. For those of us on foot they do offer a free pick up from the Thriftway grocery store in Vashon. They have several choices of accommodation including Sioux tepees, covered wagons, small cabins and a barn style dorm. Each room in the dorms hold 8 bunks and though there is no air conditioning is quite comfortable. Some linens are provided. The relative peacefulness was refreshing and I have really enjoyed my stay so far. The only real gripes I have about the place is that if you do not have a vehicle transportation is a bit difficult. The nearest bus stop is nearly 2 miles away and the hostel offers only a few early shuttles into town. Also the staff are a bit unpleasant and even getting anything is tough. It took several hours and several requests to get the fire wood promised though 9 small quarters were eventually brought down. Other than that the place is very nice and there are lots of good people who stay here and I would definitely stay here again.
