I've never been to this hostel, but it's location is fairly good to the heart of downtown. 10min walk to the biggest mall in Toronto (Eaton Center.) and from there you can walk anywhere to experience the city life here.

There is homeless people, but they won't harass you like other countries. They'll ask for money, but you can just ignore them and they won't start following you or something.

Oh, in regards to underground transportation, it's really a lot easier then other places. Basically one flat fee, will get you to anywhere on teh subway map or street car.

Streetcar to Subway Rules:
When starting on a streetcar to go on a subway, get a transfer from street car driver. When you get into the subway station, you will need to walk into the line, to GIVE your transfer to the guy selling tickets. At this point, if you plan on using a street car again once you get off the subway, there will be a red box where you get a transfer from. You have to get the transfer at this station, you don't get the transfer when you get to your destination subway station.

Subway to Streetcar Rules:
If you start on the subway, again, you need to get the transfer since it's the first point of entrance onto the system. Find the red box after you paid your fair. Get the transfer, present it to the street car driver.

In regards from pearson airport to downtown, I can't help you there since I've never taken ttc from there.
