HI-Phoenix - The Metcalf House Hostel Reviews

Only hostel in Phoenix Sep 09, 2016
Located in the residential neighborhood of Phoenix, the HI Phoenix – The Metcalf House Hostel is the only budget option in this city. So is it worth staying at?

For starters, it can be a little tricky to find. You will need good directions to find this place, or call for it. And the sign can be tough to see, as there is one placed in the grass, in front of the gate. But once you find it, you will see that it is in a quiet neighborhood. And there is usually space for on-street parking, where there does not seem to be any restrictions. And close to the downtown area.

The reception desk is only open during certain hours of the day. So definitely plan ahead of time, so you can check in. Or call staff to see if you can check in late, though they may not accept. The staff are very nice and helpful.

The dorm rooms are okay, with enough room for the most part, depending on how many beds are in the room. And which ones you end up with. But the beds are comfortable.

There is a surge protector taped to one of the bunk beds, which has more outlets. But the problem can be, where to put the devices while they are being charged. Not sure if there are multiple surge protectors throughout the room.

The common area does seem very inviting, as it does look like a nice place to hang out. And the kitchen looks okay. Plus there is a regular computer, for internet access, as well as WiFi. And laundry machines are actually located outside of the building, with detergent that is provided.

The huge downside, is the bathroom, as I find them very cramped. As they are not gender-specific, yet have multiple toilet and shower stalls, this can be a huge problem when it comes to privacy. Particularly when taking a shower, as they are located across from the sinks. Also, the problem of placing clothes somewhere. It looks like as if the hostel tried to cram in as much as possible, in such a small space.

Other than that, I find this hostel to be a kind of good one. Worth staying at, if you are on a budget. And being in a such a quiet neighborhood, with available free parking, and a good dorm room, I would not mind staying here again. At worst, it would be a mixed bag.

One thing is for sure, I would definitely take this place over the Motel 6.
