HI Hostel Stamsund Reviews
Jun 27, 2006
Youth Hostels are always a nice place to meet fellow travellers, but the official HI hostel in Stamsund, on the Lofoten Islands, is the best ever.
Set on a small bay 10 minutes walk from the center of the village, it occupies an old fishermen big house. The owner (or manager, no idea), whose name is Roar, is the stereotype of a Norwegian fisherman, with a long beard, rough looking and of few words, but he's actually very kind.
The hostel has a big common room and an equally big kitchen, and the atmosphere is fantastic. You immediately feel as if you are a new member of the family, among people who chat, play guitar, cook together and share food and stories.
You can also borrow a small row boat and the fishing equipment (= a line with some hooks) to go out in the bay and catch some codfish to cook and eat in the hostel, it's such a strange feeling to hunt for your own food!
All this for the lowest price I found in Norway (still quite high but, hey, it's Norway): the equivalent of 15 euro for a bed in a dormitory. If you have the HI membership card you get a 2 euro discount.
